Transubstantiation (in Latin, transsubstantiatio, in Greek μετουσίωσις metousiosis) is, according to the teaching of the Catholic Church, the change of substance by which the bread and the wine offered in the sacrifice of the sacrament of the Eucharist during the Mass, become, in reality, the physical Body and Blood of Jesus the Christ. [1][2]

The Catholic Church teaches that the substance, or reality, of the Eucharistic offering (either bread alone, or bread and wine) is changed into both the Body and Blood of Christ. [3]

Catholics believe that, in the offering of the Eucharist, the whole presence of Christ exists in:

Transubstantiated bread, even in small fragments, and

Transubstantiated wine, even in a single drop

All that is accessible to the senses (the outward appearances – species [4][5][6] in Latin) remains unchanged. [7]:1413[8]

What remains unaltered is also referred to as the “accidents” of the bread and wine, [9] but the term “accidents” is not used in the official definition of the doctrine by the Council of Trent. [10] The manner in which the change occurs, the Catholic Church teaches, is a mystery: “The signs of bread and wine become, in a way surpassing understanding, the Body and Blood of Christ.” [7]:1333

The Eastern Orthodox Church, Oriental Orthodox Church, and Church of the East have sometimes used the term “transubstantiation” (metousiosis); however, terms such as “divine mystery”, “trans-elementation” (μεταστοιχείωσις metastoicheiosis), “re-ordination” (μεταρρύθμισις metarrhythmisis), or simply “change” (μεταβολή) are more common among them, and they consider the Eucharist with its change from bread and wine to the body and blood of Christ a “Mystery”. Eastern Catholic Churches in communion with the Holy See likewise prefer such terms and see them alongside the teaching expressed by the term “transubstantiation”, which likewise denotes an actual change, a “becoming”, as opposed to the mere addition of a new symbolic significance expressed in “to be for us the body and blood of Christ”. [11][12]

The earliest known use of the term “transubstantiation” to describe the change from bread and wine to body and blood of Christ in the Eucharist was by Hildebert de Lavardin, Archbishop of Tours, in the 11th century. [13][14] By the end of the 12th century the term was in widespread use. [15] The Fourth Council of the Lateran, which convened beginning November 11, 1215, [16] spoke of the bread and wine as “transubstantiated” into the body and blood of Christ: “His body and blood are truly contained in the sacrament of the altar under the forms of bread and wine, the bread and wine having been transubstantiated, by God’s power, into his body and blood”. [17]

During the Protestant Reformation, the doctrine of transubstantiation was heavily criticised as an Aristotelian “pseudophilosophy” [18] imported into Christian teaching and jettisoned in favor of Martin Luther’s doctrine of sacramental union, or in favor, per Huldrych Zwingli, of the Eucharist as memorial. [19]

The Council of Trent in its 13th session ending October 11, 1551, defined transubstantiation as “that wonderful and singular conversion of the whole substance of the bread into the Body, and of the whole substance of the wine into the Blood – the species only of the bread and wine remaining – which conversion indeed the Catholic Church most aptly calls Transubstantiation”. [20]

This council officially approved use of the term “transubstantiation” to express the Catholic Church’s teaching on the subject of the conversion of the bread and wine into the body and blood of Christ in the Eucharist, with the aim of safeguarding Christ’s presence as a literal truth, while emphasizing the fact that there is no change in the empirical appearances of the bread and wine. [8] It did not however impose the Aristotelian theory of substance and accidents: it spoke only of the species (the appearances), not the philosophical term “accidents”, and the word “substance” was in ecclesiastical use for many centuries before Aristotelian philosophy was adopted in the West, [21]

as shown for instance by its use in the Nicene Creed which speaks of Christ having the same “ο σία” (Greek) or “substantia” (Latin) as the Father.

Patristic period

The belief that the Eucharist conveyed to the believer the body and blood of Christ appears to have been widespread from an early date, and the elements were commonly referred to as the body and the blood by early Christian writers. The early Christians who use these terms also speak of it as the flesh and blood of Christ, the same flesh and blood which suffered and died on the cross.

The short document known as the Teaching of the Apostles or Didache, which may be the earliest Christian document outside of the New Testament to speak of the Eucharist, says, “Let no one eat or drink of the Eucharist with you except those who have been baptized in the Name of the Lord,” [22] for it was in reference to this that the Lord said, “Do not give that which is holy to dogs.” Matthew 7:6

A letter by Saint Ignatius of Antioch to the Romans, written in AD 106 says: “I desire the bread of God, which is the flesh of Jesus Christ.” [23]

Writing to the Christians of Smyrna, in about AD 106, Saint Ignatius warned them to “stand aloof from such heretics”, because, among other reasons, “they abstain from the Eucharist and from prayer, because they confess not the Eucharist to be the flesh of our Savior Jesus Christ, which suffered for our sins, and which the Father, of His goodness, raised up again.” [24]

In about 150, Justin Martyr wrote that the Eucharist is “Not as common bread and common drink do we receive these; but in like manner as Jesus Christ our Savior, having been made flesh by the Word of God, had both flesh and blood for our salvation, so likewise have we been taught that the food which is blessed by the prayer of His word, and from which our blood and flesh by transmutation are nourished, is the flesh and blood of that Jesus who was made flesh.” [25]

Justin Martyr wrote, in Dialogue with Trypho, ch 70: “Now it is evident, that in this prophecy to the bread which our Christ gave us to eat, in remembrance of His being made flesh for the sake of His believers, for whom also He suffered; and to the cup which He gave us to drink, in remembrance of His own blood, with giving of thanks.”

In about 200 AD, Tertullian wrote (Against Marcion IV. 40): “Taking bread and distributing it to his disciples he made it his own body by saying, ‘This is my body,’ that is a ‘figure of my body.’ On the other hand, there would not have been a figure unless there was a true body.”

The Apostolic Constitutions (compiled c. 380) says: “Let the bishop give the oblation, saying, The body of Christ; and let him that receiveth say, Amen. And let the deacon take the cup; and when he gives it, say, The blood of Christ, the cup of life; and let him that drinketh say, Amen.” [26]

Saint Ambrose of Milan (d. 397) wrote:

Perhaps you will say, “I see something else, how is it that you assert that I receive the Body of Christ?” … Let us prove that this is not what nature made, but what the blessing consecrated, and the power of blessing is greater than that of nature, because by blessing nature itself is changed. … For that sacrament which you receive is made what it is by the word of Christ. But if the word of Elijah had such power as to bring down fire from heaven, shall not the word of Christ have power to change the nature of the elements? … Why do you seek the order of nature in the Body of Christ, seeing that the Lord Jesus Himself was born of a Virgin, not according to nature? It is the true Flesh of Christ which was crucified and buried, this is then truly the Sacrament of His Body. The Lord Jesus Himself proclaims: “This Is My Body.” Before the blessing of the heavenly words another nature is spoken of, after the consecration the Body is signified. He Himself speaks of His Blood. Before the consecration it has another name, after it is called Blood. And you say, Amen, that is, It is true. Let the heart within confess what the mouth utters, let the soul feel what the voice speaks.” [27]

Other fourth-century Christian writers say that in the Eucharist there occurs a “change”, [28] “transelementation”, [29]

“transformation”, [30] “transposing”, [31]

“alteration” [32] of the bread into the body of Christ.

In AD 400, Augustine quotes Cyprian (AD 200): “For as Christ says ‘I am the true vine,’ it follows that the blood of Christ is wine, not water; and the cup cannot appear to contain His blood by which we are redeemed and quickened, if the wine be absent; for by the wine is the blood of Christ typified, …” [33]

Middle Ages

In the eleventh century, Berengar of Tours denied that any material change in the elements was needed to explain the Eucharistic Presence, thereby provoking a considerable stir. [15]

Berengar’s position was never diametrically opposed to that of his critics, and he was probably never excommunicated, but the controversy that he aroused forced people to clarify the doctrine of the Eucharist. [34]

The earliest known use of the term “transubstantiation” to describe the change from bread and wine to body and blood of Christ was by Hildebert de Lavardin, Archbishop of Tours (died 1133), in about 1079, [35] long before the Latin West, under the influence especially of Thomas Aquinas (c. 1227-1274), accepted Aristotelianism.

Although it was only in the West that Aristotelian philosophy prevailed, [36] the objective reality of the Eucharistic change in a valid Divine liturgy is also believed in by the Eastern Orthodox Church and the other ancient Churches of the East (see metousiosis).

In 1215, the Fourth Lateran Council used the word transubstantiated in its profession of faith, when speaking of the change that takes place in the Eucharist. It was only later in the 13th century that Aristotelian metaphysics was accepted and a philosophical elaboration in line with that metaphysics was developed, which found classic formulation in the teaching of Saint Thomas Aquinas.” [15]

In 1551, the Council of Trent officially defined, with a minimum of technical philosophical language, [15] that “by the consecration of the bread and wine there takes place a change of the whole substance of the bread into the substance of the body of Christ our Lord and of the whole substance of the wine into the substance of his blood. This change the holy Catholic Church has fittingly and properly called transubstantiation.” [37]

Protestant criticisms

Title page of Martin Luther’s De Captivitate Babylonica Ecclesiae

In the Protestant Reformation, the doctrine of transubstantiation became a matter of much controversy. Martin Luther held that “It is not the doctrine of transubstantiation which is to be believed, but simply that Christ really is present at the Eucharist”. [38] In his “On the Babylonian Captivity of the Church” (published on 6 October 1520) Luther wrote:

Therefore it is an absurd and unheard-of juggling with words, to understand “bread” to mean “the form, or accidents of bread,” and “wine” to mean “the form, or accidents of wine.” Why do they not also understand all other things to mean their forms, or accidents? Even if this might be done with all other things, it would yet not be right thus to emasculate the words of God and arbitrarily to empty them of their meaning. Moreover, the Church had the true faith for more than twelve hundred years, during which time the holy Fathers never once mentioned this transubstantiation — certainly, a monstrous word for a monstrous idea — until the pseudo-philosophy of Aristotle became rampant in the Church these last three hundred years. During these centuries many other things have been wrongly defined, for example, that the Divine essence neither is begotten nor begets, that the soul is the substantial form of the human body, and the like assertions, which are made without reason or sense, as the Cardinal of Cambray himself admits. [39]

In his 1528 Confession Concerning Christ’s Supper he wrote:

Why then should we not much more say in the Supper, “This is my body”, even though bread and body are two distinct substances, and the word “this” indicates the bread? Here, too, out of two kinds of objects a union has taken place, which I shall call a “sacramental union”, because Christ’s body and the bread are given to us as a sacrament. This is not a natural or personal union, as is the case with God and Christ. It is also perhaps a different union from that which the dove has with the Holy Spirit, and the flame with the angel, but it is also assuredly a sacramental union. [40]

What Luther thus called a “sacramental union” is often erroneously called consubstantiation by non-Lutherans.

In “On the Babylonian Captivity”, Luther upheld belief in the Real Presence of Jesus and, in his 1523 treatise The Adoration of the Sacrament, defended adoration of the body and blood of Christ in the Eucharist.

Huldrych Zwingli taught that the sacrament is purely symbolic and memorial in character, arguing that this was the meaning of Jesus’ instruction: “Do this in remembrance of me”. [41]

The 39 articles of religion in the Church of England declare: “Transubstantiation (or the change of the substance of Bread and Wine) in the Supper of the Lord, cannot be proved by holy Writ; but is repugnant to the plain words of Scripture, overthroweth the nature of a Sacrament, and hath given occasion to many superstitions”; [42] and made Mass illegal.

As is noted above, the canonical hours stemmed from Jewish prayer. During the Babylonian Exile, when the Temple was no longer in use, the first synagogues were established, and the services (at fixed hours of the day) of Torah readings, psalms, and hymns began to evolve. This “sacrifice of praise” began to be substituted for the sacrifices of animals.

By the time of the Roman Empire, the Jews (and eventually early Christians) began to follow the Roman system of conducting the business day in scheduling their times for prayer [citation needed] . In Roman cities, the bell in the forum rang the beginning of the business day at about six o’clock in the morning (Prime, the “first hour”), noted the day’s progress by striking again at about nine o’clock in the morning (Terce, the “third hour”), tolled for the lunch break at noon (Sext, the “sixth hour”), called the people back to work again at about three o’clock in the afternoon (None, the “ninth hour”), and rang the close of the business day at about six o’clock in the evening (the time for evening prayer).

The first miracle attributed to the Apostles, the healing of the crippled man on the temple steps, occurred because Peter and John went to the Temple to pray (Acts 3:1 ). This was at the “ninth hour” of prayer (about 3 pm), the time at which the “evening” sacrifice was celebrated in the Temple in the New Testament [Second Temple] period. One of the defining moments of the early Church, the decision to include Gentiles among the community of believers, arose from a vision Peter had while praying at noontime (Acts 10:9–49 ). This was at the “sixth hour,” the time of the Mussaf prayers associated with additional sacrifices in the Temple on special days.

As Christianity began to separate from Judaism, the practice of praying at fixed times continued. The early church was known to pray the Psalms (Acts 4:23–30 ), which has remained a part of the canonical hours and all Christian prayer since. By 60 AD, the Didache, the oldest known liturgical manual for Christians, recommended disciples to pray the Lord’s Prayer three times a day; this practice found its way into the canonical hours as well. Pliny the Younger (63 – ca. 113), who was not a Christian himself, mentions not only fixed times of prayer by believers, but also specific services—other than the Eucharist—assigned to those times: “they met on a stated day before it was light, and addressed a form of prayer to Christ, as to a divinity … after which it was their custom to separate, and then reassemble, to eat in common a harmless meal. .” [20]

By the second and third centuries, such Church Fathers as Clement of Alexandria, Origen, and Tertullian wrote of the practice of Morning and Evening Prayer, and of the prayers at terce, sext, and none. The prayers could be prayed individually or in groups. By the third century, the Desert Fathers (the earliest monks), began to live out St. Paul’s command to “pray without ceasing” (I_Thessalonians 5:17 ) by having one group of monks pray one fixed-hour prayer while having another group pray the next prayer.

Middle Ages

As the format of unbroken fixed-hour prayer developed in the Christian monastic communities in the East and West, longer prayers soon grew, but the cycle of prayer became the norm in daily life in monasteries. By the fourth century, the characteristics of the canonical hours more or less took their present shape. For secular (non-monastic) clergymen and lay people, the fixed-hour prayers were by necessity much shorter. In many churches and basilicas staffed by monks, the form of the fixed-hour prayers was a hybrid of secular and monastic practice.

In the East, the development of the Divine Services shifted from the area around Jerusalem to Constantinople. In particular, St. Theodore the Studite (ca. 758 – ca. 826) combined a number of influences from the Byzantine court ritual with monastic practices common in Asia Minor, and added thereto a number of hymns composed by himself and his brother Joseph (see Typicon for further details).

In the West, St. Benedict in his famous Rule modeled his guidelines for the prayers on the customs of the basilicas of Rome. It was he who expounded the concept in Christian prayer of the inseparability of the spiritual life from the physical life. The Benedictines began to call the prayers the Opus Dei or “Work of God.”

As the Divine Office grew more important in the life of the Church, the rituals became more elaborate. Soon, praying the Office began to require various books, such as a psalter for the psalms, a lectionary to find the assigned Scripture reading for the day, a Bible to proclaim the reading, a hymnal for singing, etc. As parishes grew in the Middle Ages away from cathedrals and basilicas, a more concise way of arranging the hours was needed. So, a sort of list developed called the Breviary, which gave the format of the daily office and the texts to be used.

The spread of breviaries eventually reached Rome, where Pope Innocent III extended its use to the Roman Curia. The Franciscans sought a one-volume breviary for its friars to use during travels, so the order adopted the Breviarium Curiae, but substituting the Gallican Psalter for the Roman. The Franciscans gradually spread this breviary throughout Europe. Pope Nicholas III would then adopt the widely used Franciscan breviary to be the breviary used in Rome. By the 14th century, the breviary

Parables and Paradoxes Meanings Hidden, Yet Obvious

“All these things spake Jesus unto the multitude in parables; and without a parable spake he not unto them: That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world” (Matthew 13:34-35)

Cor 3:14

But their minds were blinded: for until this day remains the same veil not taken away in the reading of the old covenant.;

Kill all that work on the sabbath, what does it mean?

EXODUS 31:12 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 31:13 Speak thou also unto the children of Israel ( those that are climbing the MT of attainment ), saying, Verily my Sabbaths ( sabbath means 7 ) ye shall keep: for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations; that ye may know that I am the LORD that doth sanctify you.

31:14 Ye shall keep the sabbath therefore; for it is holy unto you: every one that defileth it shall surely be put to death: for whosoever doeth any work therein, that soul shall be cut off from among his people.

31:15 Six days may work be done; but in the seventh is the sabbath of rest, holy to the LORD: whosoever doeth any work in the sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death.

31:16 Wherefore the children of Israel shall keep the sabbath, to observe the sabbath throughout their generations, for a perpetual covenant.

31:17 It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever: for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed.

Six days may work be done; but in the seventh is the sabbath of rest, holy to the LORD: whosoever doeth any work in the sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death.

Every one that defileth it shall surely be put to death, everyone or “whoever” is a symbol any negative thoughts that may arise in meditation , because the sabbath is the opening of the crown chakra, the work is done in six days, meaning that the energy has impacted the pineal gland, the sixth day of creation, yet the seventh day is the day of the lord, the crown chakra fully opened, any thoughts that creep in during this state of high meditation shall be out to death.

“Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy.”

“Six days shah thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God; in it thou shalt not do any work.” (Exodus 20:10).

Six days of the week belong to us, but the seventh day belongs to God.”Thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates.”

“For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day; wherefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day, and hallowed it” (Exodus 20:11).

“And remember that thou wast a servant in the land of Egypt, and that the Lord thy God brought thee out thence through a mighty hand and by a stretched out arm: therefore the Lord thy God commanded thee to keep the Sabbath day” (Deuteronomy 5:15).”

This is the Sabbath WITHIN you.

8.” but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your animals, nor the alien within your gates.

Who is the alien within your gates?

It is the energy that has been lying dormant in your solar plexus your whole life, it has now risen to the brain, and here it is referred to as the alien.

“(gates are logic circuits of your brain) The twelve cranial nerves, where the kundalini enters the fornix (furnace) of the brain.

THE ALIEN within your gates is the solar plexus energy mixed with spinal oil, headed for the fornix (furnace). When the energy enters the third ventricle (the mercy seat) it lights, just like a real furnace pilot light, and you meet God.

Jesus has a kundalini.Joh 3:14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up.

This is the Kundalni

Genesis:32:30 Jacob sees God face to face, and Jacob named the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.

Rev.22:4 – And they (the servants of the Lord) shall see his face; and his name [shall be] in their foreheads ( a symbol of the higher consciousness ). here we see the pineal gland mentioned again.

The peniel gland is the bodies light receptor. Stimulated in meditation releases melatonin. The oil rises from the lower spine to the pineal gland and lights in the fornax, or furnace, you see God face to face.

If thine eye be single, thy body will fill with light. The single eye is the pineal gland. old english spelling was peniel. The energy rises through the 7 nerve centers called chakras.

Exodus 20:1-17

7 chakras or nerve centers, seven seals, seven churches of Asia etc.

The entire Bible, every story, from end to end is inside your head, it is an account of mans evolutionary progress out of the gross material matter of the animal quality of his soul, to the higher spiritual mind, from above ( the universe).

EX 35:2 Six days shall work be done, but on the seventh day there shall be to you an holy day, a sabbath of rest to the LORD: whosoever (neighbor) doeth work therein shall be put to death.

Some bibles have the word neighbor in place of whosoever, the neighbor is the left hemisphere of the brain, when one is receiving enlightenment from the east or right side, the left brain is under going a transformation, if the neighbor (the left) speaks (works) it shall be put to death, just a symbolic way to describe that any thoughts that arise from left brain activity will be shutdown.

The spiritual definition of SABBATH

The symbol of the state of conditions of the joining of the higher cosmic consciousness within the soul.

“Then shall the land (brain/mind) enjoy her (mind/spirit) Sabbaths, as longs as it lieth desolate, and ye be in your enemies land (lower thoughts, Egypt) even then shall the land rest, and enjoy her Sabbaths (unity consciousness).

As long as it lieth desolate it shall have rest; even the rest which it had not in your Sabbaths, when ye dwelt upon it” Duet 14:34

Then shall the general outspread life of the soul enjoy the Buddhic consciousness during the periodic spiritual states when it is without the sensations, passions, and desires of the lower qualities, being relative and unreal, are non existent (in enemies land). Even then shall the indrawn life partake of the bliss. As long as it is without the opposites it shall have peace (from the turbulent emotions), which it had not in the periodic material states when the lower qualities were in the stress and suffering of life.

“These sabbaths (of Lev 13) are seven Pralayas between seven manavantaras or what we call rounds” blavatsky the secret doctrine.

If it says that no one is to work on the sabbath, then why dud jesus heal on that day against the command? When the kundalini has reached the brain, the work is finished, to be put to death, is the death of the lowerslef or ego.

Mark 3

3:1 And he (jesus) entered again into the synagogue (the brain/mind, center of ones consciousness); and there was a man (the rational mind still under the ego) there which had a withered hand (hand is a symbol of the direction of mind).

3:2 And they (the pharisees, the lower mind) watched him, whether he would heal him on the sabbath day (the crown chakra opened, one of god consciousness); that they might (the lower mind) accuse him.

3:3 And he saith unto the man which had the withered hand, Stand forth. The withered hand is the higher mntal faculties that have taken a left turn and abandoned the spiritual path

3:4 And he saith unto them, Is it lawful to do good on the sabbath days, or to do evil? to save life, or to kill? But they held their peace.

3:5 And when he had looked round about on them with anger, being grieved for the hardness of their hearts, he saith unto the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it out: and his hand was restored whole as the other. The hand which is the directing principle of the higher mental faculties has reached out to the higher and has been restored, this happens when you take NO thought in meditation.

3:6 And the Pharisees went forth, and straightway took counsel with the Herodians against him, how they might destroy him.

Jesus and the father are ONE, the sabbath represents the great day of the lord, the mind being brought into unity, the higher consciousness (Jesus) heals the withered hand ( the mind under the direction of the lower or left brain HERODIANS), the ego fighting back again, as the higher power is busy eliminating it, and stripping the ego of it’s final coats and cloaks, the coverings of the ego. jesus can work on the sabbath, because it is the one doing the healing of the mind, it’s the lower mind Pharisees that will always rebel, and of course it tries to destroy Jesus, the higher principle.

Pharisees

A symbol of the state of mind which produces literalism, formalisms and dogmatism.

13:31 The same day there came certain of the Pharisees, saying unto him, Get thee out, and depart hence: for Herod will kill thee. 13:32 And he said unto them, Go ye, and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out devils, and I do cures to day and to morrow, and the third day I shall be perfected.

THREE, the physical, the intellectual and the emotional mind meshac, shedrach and abednego.

The literalists are afraid of true interpretations of scripture, it is there teachings that are inside of us, as jesus said we are saturated with the teachings of the pharisees, the teachings of those lower minds, the ego adheres to these false ideas, as they are held within the consciousness of us that have heard these things our whole lives, so in this sense, the ego in it’s inward spiritual sense is a type of Pharisee.

“Herod the fox” is a reference to the sense-nature as a hole or “bottomless pit” in which the lower principle “Herod” lives within each one of us.

Then comes the blaming of Jesus for healing on the sabbath and other accusations, and his eventual crucifixion, see Jesus not crucified Literally, elsewhere.

It’s much better to understand the true nature of these texts, instead of the letter that kills, then we can understand the true meaning of these timeless pearls of dark sayings.

“like a beautiful seedling hidden away within a rough and ugly husk, through which it must break in order to achieve itself, our divine self hood has been hidden and compressed within material conditions. Consciousness has had to use first one kind of vehicle and then another, and as the vehicle so has then another, and as the vehicle, so has been the quality of the self-expression” Joseph Campbell

Image of god

This expression signifies a projection of the divine nature on the two highest planes of the soul, and constitutes, when united with mind, the archetypal man energized with the truth from above. “And god said let us make man in our image, after our likeness”

What is this image?

It is the mind of god (the higher consciousness).

The Platonists called Dionysus, “our master” for the mind in us is Dionyaiacal and the image of Dionysus. Illiad.

The image is not a physical image, but a spiritual image, or the mind.

“The east wind (spirit) has shattered you (the ego), surrounded by the seas (the turbulent emotional mind). Your riches, your goods, your cargo, your crew, your sailors, your caulkers, your commercial agents, all the soldiers you carry with you, the whole host who are aboard; (all of the above represent all of the negative thoughts that arise out of lower EGO mind thinking, especially the lower emotional outbursting mind, these are riches of the lower nature, this is trading gold in Tarshish), all will sink surrounded by the seas (collective unconscious, normal emotional waking consciousness) on the day of your (the ego’s) shipwreck.” (Ez.27-26-27).

Isaac’s wife Rebecca (Rivka) gave birth to fraternal twin sons: Jacob (Ya’akov) and Esau.

The two brothers were at war with each other even before they were born. They struggled within Rebecca’s womb. Esau was Isaac’s favorite, because he was a good hunter, but the more spiritually-minded Jacob was Rebecca’s favorite. The womb is the mind, where the spiritual nature is born within each person, the physical must be overcome first.

Since the literal meaning of Jacob and Esau’s relationship cannot be correct, then what is the passage in Romans intended to teach? To begin to understand, one needs just to dig deeper and see more clearly.

However, one must learn to stop relying on the physical eyes to see, especially since spiritual things are not seen with carnal (physical) eyes.

One eventually learns that this is the reality of obvious (seen) and hidden (unseen) understandings.

Ironically, this is the very thing that the symbolic relationship of Jacob and Esau is meant to teach. One cannot understand that these passages are about spiritual understandings until one begins to understand spiritually.

In reality, the passages in Romans (and elsewhere) have little to do with Jacob and Esau per se. The real teachings lie deep below the surface. The passages have everything to do with a central allegory that is replayed throughout Biblical scriptures as well as in many other religious writings. The deepest meanings point inward, not outward.

Jacob and Esau are meant to represent the dual nature of fallen man and the true relationship between the physical and the spiritual that must occur before carnal man becomes holy (whole), superior over his/her five sense life.

In a sense, Esau represents the physical part of each of us, or rather that part of us who is a slave to the senses of the physical body. Esau is willing to sell his (spiritual) birthright when he is overcome by (physical) hunger. We do the same nearly every day. Jacob represents the spirit of man, which is meant to be the ruler of the body, but rarely is.

Jacob is the part of man that is real (Israel) because, in reality, the physical is a reflection of the real (spiritual). Carnal man is ruled by his senses rather than the spirit and thus spends his life trying to find happiness in the gratification of the sense demands, but never finds it.

Carnal man spends all of his time going places and acquiring the things of the world because he thinks that these will make him happy. Although he may seem happy for a period of time, his dissatisfaction always returns, usually prompting him to seek even more of the earthly treasures that failed to please him in the first place. No matter how often he eats, his hunger always returns to haunt him.

This is the enmity (dissatisfaction) that was placed between Lucifer (the senses) and the seed of the woman (the Christ within us). If one was able to find lasting satisfaction in this physical world, then one would never find the Christ that is within. Ah yes, these things work together for the good of man, albeit carnal man thinks them to be a curse.

The same allegory is played out in the relationship between Isaac and Ishmael, man and woman, and many other places in the scriptures. In Eden, the woman is placed in subjugation to her husband, the true order.

As in the allegory of Jacob and Esau, the creation story has little to do with men and woman and everything to do with each of us as holy temples of God. In reality, man and woman are equal in the sight of God, but man is often caught in his own web of carnality and usually proclaims his superiority over women/the emotions/sin. In the deeper (spiritual) allegory that is intended, Eve represents our lower emotional mind. Her children are the thoughts that arise from the physical senses as well as the fruit(s) of “that tree”. This parable is meant to teach us about ourselves

In the creation parable, Eve (the body and the physical senses) tempts Adam (the true self) with the enticements of the tree of knowledge (catering to the senses). She tells him that this fruit ‘is delicious to the taste (sense pleasures) and very desirable”. Eve steps out of her proper role and Adam follows into bondage.

It is the wrong order which is of carnal man, who sees, thinks, and lives in the world of gratifying the physical senses. Thus, that which was supposed to be last (the senses), or rather in subjugation to the spirit, is now first and rules it. Man/woman becomes whole (holy) when the relationship is reversed. That’s the meaning of Esau and Jacob switching birthrights.

The last will be first and the first will be last or rather, things will be put in their proper order with the spirit ruling the flesh.

Unfortunately, carnal man often loves the chains that bind him. He remains in subjugation to the senses because this fruit tastes so good! As the Buddhists teach, man’s attachment to the sense pleasures and his aversion to non-pleasures is ultimately the cause of his suffering, because each are temporary. When man is presented with something unpleasurable, or deprived of something pleasurable, he finds himself in misery. To find lasting happiness, he must entirely change his way of being. He must put off the natural man (of the senses) and be born again as a new being.

The one who looks only at the literal in all is like the farmer plowing his field when veins of gold lie in the rock deep beneath his field. He continues to make his living on the surface while there is great treasure to be found by digging deeper. Begin looking for the hidden meanings and the world about you will change. There will appear a new heaven and a new earth. And it will be you.

When Jesus told the people that he would raise the destroyed temple in three days, few understood that he was speaking of the temple of his body. Man is prone to take the most obvious and literal meanings as his truth. Man’s own mind and his carnal way of thinking is what usually lead him astray.

It is the CARNALLY minded (natural man), that reads spiritual scriptures in their literal destructive form.

Carnal man will never understand the words of holiness because he does not harbor the (fertile) soil from which truth (as a seed) sprouts. It is beyond his comprehension. Rather he falsely perceives himself in possession of the very truth which he denies is in others. He is symbolically likened unto a bottle which is filled with wine and so there is not room for new wine. And he is as a man who continually patches a ripped or worn garment with scraps of old cloth, never realizing there are new clothes for the having.

Why is it that God teaches us in parables? One might notice that parables are a fountain of wisdom from which all may drink, from spiritual neophyte to sage and adept. An individual may discover a great truth in a parable that serves him well, then uncover another as he progresses, then more deeper and profound meanings as he progresses even further.

In a way, a parable acts as an inexhaustible store of wisdom and knowledge from which to draw. Like God, parables are not respecters of persons. All are served according to their needs and desires. All who will, may quench their thirst at the fountain of spiritual truths within parables and allegories. It is truly a marvelous thing.

Embedded within what may be called the “hidden” teachings within parables and allegories, there is often a very obvious call to carnal man to wake from his slumber. These often come in the form of a paradox. A paradox is an idea which appears to be in contradiction on the surface, but in harmony at deeper levels of understanding.

Most are familiar with such paradoxes as “… whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life shall find it.” (Matthew 16:25) In a paradox, there is an obvious and apparent contradiction that is difficult to ignore, even for the most profane of individuals. The contradiction is like a voice calling one to wake up. It is meant to get one to exclaim like Nicodemus of old: “How can these things be?”

Thus, carnal man cannot rightfully claim that he missed the deeper symbolic teachings that lie behind the parables or allegories. The apparent contradictions of paradoxical statements are more than sufficient to call to those who, as word-worshipers, never look past the literal in anything. Inasmuch as it is impossible to reconcile paradoxes without resorting to the deeper symbolical meanings, one cannot rightfully remain in a (false) state of profane literalism. Yes, nothing is hidden from us, but that which we hide from ourselves.

It is paradoxical in itself that language has great limitations, yet great power. Like the proverbial two-edged sword, language can be like a trap which we often use to snare ourselves, yet it also can be the very thing that frees us. In reality, words are merely symbols to convey thoughts. To understand what is being communicated, it is necessary for both parties to agree on a definition.

A great irony is that carnal man, in his attempt to improve communication by trying to define everything in precise terms, depreciates it. The reality is that the full power of words are not in their literal definitions, but rather in the ability to encompass complex thoughts in them. When carnal man loses his vanity and is able to see far beyond the literal, then he finds great treasures which only need to be uncovered.

“And whosoever will lose his life (denounce his/her ego, the lower life) shall find it (the true higher self).” (Matthew 16:25)

When one begins to realize that words are symbols, and symbols are higher communication, then one begins to emerge from the state of mind that holds him in bondage. Eventually, he even sees beyond words as language and ultimately realizes that all truth is symbolized in the very creation that surrounds us. Ultimately, one realizes the source of all and comprehends all mysteries. Yet, they are only mysteries because we don’t understand the obvious.

Jacob and Esau

YOUR STORY!!

The left and right hemispheres of the brain, the physical and the higher spiritual, battling over their birthright as to who will rule the nations.

This is the Cain and able story with a slightly different twist, the physical Esau must take second place to the spiritual Jacob, he won the wrestling match, because his thigh (desire) was put out, by the angel (the higher consciousness).

After reading this parable, you know the meaning of the following verse.

Matthew 20:16 “So the last will be first, and the first will be last.”

“The two children ( the right and left hemispheres of the brain) inside you will become the fathers of two nations (where are the nations? in your limbs twain!!). Just like the two are fighting with each other now, the two nations will struggle with each other. One will be stronger than the other and the older will serve the younger.”

Esau means “hairy” (Heb: se’ar) a wordplay on Seir,[11] the region he settled in Edom after being 40 years of age ( the fourfold nature ) where he became the progenitor of the Edomites. The name Edom is also attributed to Esau, meaning “red” (Heb: `admoni);

Isaac was 40 years old ( this is the 4 fold nature ) when he married Rebekah. Many years went by, and still they didn’t have any children. Isaac prayed to God, “Oh Lord, please look with favor on my wife Rebekah, and bless us with children.”

Esau returned to his brother Jacob being famished from the fields. He begged his twin brother to give him some “red pottage”. (paralleling his nickname, Hebrew: אדום`Edom, meaning “Red”. Jacob offered to give Esau a bowl of stew in exchange for his birthright (the right to be recognized as firstborn), and Esau agreed.

24: And when her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb. 25: And the first came out red, all over like an hairy garment; and they called his name Esau. 26: And after that came his brother out, and his hand took hold on Esau’s heel; and his name was called Jacob: and Isaac was threescore years old when she bare them. 27: a score is twenty, three score is 666, it is the 666 lower mind of animal sense desire nature.

And the boys grew: and Esau was a cunning hunter ( a symbol of the animal nature ), a man of the field; and Jacob was a smooth man ( a symbol of no spiritual power ), dwelling in tents ( tents are a symbol of the lower self, Egypt etc…). 28: And Isaac loved Esau, because he did eat of his venison: but Rebekah loved Jacob. 29: And Jacob sod pottage: and Esau came from the field, and he was faint: 30: And Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, with that same red pottage; for I am faint: therefore was his name called Edom. 31: And Jacob said, Sell me this day thy birthright. 32: And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me? This sis symbolism of the first born unenlightened animal mind giving in to the higher divine impulses within the soul/mind )

meaning

24: And when her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb. 25: And the first came out red, all over like an hairy garment; and they called his name Esau. 26: And after that came his brother out, and his hand took hold on Esau’s heel; and his name was called Jacob: and Isaac was threescore years old when she bare them. 27:

Red is a symbol of the lower emotional mind (sin), the hand being a symbol of the directing principle of mind, holds on to Esau’s heel, heel is another symbol of the lower mind, the higher aspect born with the animal mind, follows the dictates of the physical (hairy garment), until it has reached maturity, then it realizes that the path of following the lower (Esau) must change. Isaac was threescore ( 666 ), three score is sixty which reduces to the number six six six, the number of the natural man, six is always the physical in biblical mythology, so is 40 and 9.

When we are born, we are born with our animal instincts, but unless a person does not cultivate their spiritual Right side in meditation, then Esau will be in charge of the mental faculties their whole lives, that’s why Jacob (the higher spiritual) must change birthrights, so the the spiritual is in control, with the animal nature taking second place in the persons operative mind.

Remember what god said in Daniel?

“I gave man the mind of an animal (Esau) until seven times passes by for him” Then Jacob will take control.

And the boys grew: and Esau was a cunning hunter, a man of the field; and Jacob was a smooth man, dwelling in tents.

A cunning hunter man of the field (animal instincts that come before spiritual ideas), this is the lower aspect of mind, Jacob a smooth man, the mind devoid of power in latency, Isaac the rational mind loved the lower because it took instructions from the rational mind, which pleases it, eating venison, a symbol of adhering to the things of the animal nature.

And Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, with that same red pottage; for I am faint: The lower mind cries out to the higher, it needs the same pottage it was born with, because it is losing it’s power, so Jacob (a natural man (mind, in the becoming of it’s higher aspect) says OK, but only if you trade birthrights with me, and of course the ego says yes.

Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me?

The ego realized it has lost the battle to control the mind, so it gives in, it is satisfied, because the higher mind gave it a blessing and allows it function, but now it functions from a higher aspect. The ego dies to the higher nature.

Esau was a hairy man, in biblical mythology hair is a symbol of power, it has a dual aspect depending on the story, in this story “hairy” is a symbol of lower aspect.

Esau was an edomite, one of the Canaanites, this represents the lower mind, the physical. Notice the mention of 40 years, the number 40 represents the physical body and the 4 fold nature of us all.

Isaac was 40 years old when he married Rebekah, also making reference to the physical. Rebekah is a symbol of the higher emotional right brain.

Esau returned to his brother Jacob being famished from the fields

In the fields means that he was tilling soil, just as Cain was a tiller of the soil, this represents the mind that churns out thoughts from it’s lower aspect (soil).

begged his twin brother to give him some “red pottage”. (paralleling his nickname, Hebrew: Edom, meaning “Red”. SIN/emotions/desire, sense etc….

Red pottage is a symbol of the things from the emotional nature, the lower mind is dwelling in the emotions and trying to get the higher mind Jacob to follow it’s ways.

Jacob offered to give Esau a bowl of stew in exchange for his birthright (the right to be recognized as firstborn), and Esau agreed.

Jacob “a smooth man” smoothness emphasizes kind, meek, lack of hair “spiritual in nature, yet not fully realized. So the higher mind offers to satisfy the cravings of the lower ego by offering it stew, “a symbol of food, as in feeding the lower quality all this it knows” which is operating from the lower physical mind. Since it really wants no part of things of the higher, it says to the higher sure we can trade places, but as long as you keep feeding me the things I need.

“The two children ( the right and left hemispheres of the brain) inside you will become the fathers of two nations (where are the nations? in your limbs twain!!). Just like the two are fighting with each other now, the two nations will struggle with each other. One will be stronger than the other and the older will serve the younger.”

The ego realizes that it is to take second place to the spiritual, the first born always represents the physical animal, yet in due time the higher aspect of mind knows that it must subdue this ego and put it second place, the birthright is changed, the ego takes it’s proper second place.

FULL story

Esau the Jacob

Isaac was 40 years old when he married Rebekah. Many years went by, and still they didn’t have any children. Isaac prayed to God, “Oh Lord, please look with favor on my wife Rebekah, and bless us with children.”

God heard Isaac’s prayer.

Soon, Rebekah was going to have a baby – but not one baby, she was going to have two!

Before her twins were even born, Rebekah could feel them kicking and fighting.

The duality of mind giving birth to it’s higher unified mind

“Why is this happening?” she asked God. God answered her saying,

“The two children inside you will become the fathers of two nations. Just like the two are fighting with each other now, the two nations will struggle with each other. One will be stronger than the other and the older will serve the younger.”

Soon it came time for the children to be born.

The first baby born was a boy. He was all red and covered with hair, and so Isaac and Rebekah named him Esau which means ‘hairy’. The second baby was also a boy, and hie was born grabbing onto Esau’s heel. Isaac and Rebekah named him Jacob which means ‘thief’. Isaac was 60 years old when Esau and Jacob were born.

The boys grew up.

Esau became a strong and great hunter who loved the outdoors. Isaac preferred Esau because he loved the wild game he brought home from hunting

Jacob was a quiet man, who liked to stay inside. Rebekah preferred Jacob.

One day, Jacob was at home cooking. He had just made a great huge pot of stew. Esau came home from hunting and was so hungry.

“Give me some of that red stuff. I am so hungry!” Esau demanded.

Jacob answered him, “Sure! I’ll give you some stew if you will give me your birthright.”

The birthright was a very important thing. It went to Esau because he was born first.

When Isaac, his father, died, Esau’s birthright would make him head of the household. He would get twice as much of his father’s wealth as Jacob would.

“What good will a birthright do me if I starve to death? said Esau. Jacob insisted.

“Do you promise?” Jacob asked.

“I promise,” Esau said.

Jacob gave Esau some stew and bread. Esau ate, drank and when he was done, got up and left.

He gave up his birthright for a bowl of stew.

When Isaac was so old he could no longer see. He called to Esau, his oldest son, and said, “My son”

“Here I am” said Esau

“My son, I am so old that I may die soon. Take your bow and arrows and go out hunting. When you come back, cook the meat you hunted and bring it to me to eat. Then I will bless you before I die.”

Rebekah heard everything that Isaac had said to Esau.

As soon as Esau left, Rebekah said Jacob, “Your father has sent Esau away to hunt. When Esau gets back, he is going to fix your father’s favorite dinner, and your father is going to give him his blessing.

“Quick! Do what I say! Go out into the fields and bring me two young goats, and I will make your father’s favorite dinner using them. Then, you take it to him, and your father will think you are Esau, and he will bless you.”

But Jacob said, “Esau is all hairy, and I am not! If my father feels me, he will know I am trying to trick him, and he will curse me instead of blessing me!”

“Let the curse be on me,” Jacob’s mother said, “just do what I say.”

Jacob did as his mother asked and went out to get the goats.

Rebekah prepared a delicious meal from the goats that Jacob had brought her. Then she took some of Esau’s clothes and had Jacob put them on. She took the skins from the goats and put them on Jacob’s arms and the back of his neck so that he would be hairy like his brother.

Carrying the meal, Jacob said, “Father.”

“Yes, replied Isaac. “Which of my sons are you?”

“I am Esau, your first born, ” Jacob said. “I have done as you asked. Now eat so that you may give me your blessing”

“How did you do it so quickly?” his father asked.

“Your God was with me, ” Jacob answered.

Isaac said. “Come here. Let me touch you.”

Jacob went to him and Isaac felt the fur on Jacob’s neck and arms.

Isaac said, “The voice is Jacob’s, but the arms are Esau’s.”

Once more Isaac asked, “Are you really my son, Esau?” “I am,” Jacob said.

And so Isaac ate the meal he thought Esau had brought him.

When he was finished he said, “Come here, my son, and kiss me, and then I will give you my blessing.”

So Jacob went to his father and kissed him. Isaac could smell the smell of Esau’s clothes, and so he said,

“The smell of my son is like the smell of open country the Lord has blessed. May God give you the dew of heaven, and the richness of the earth, corn and new wine in plenty!

Let nations and peoples serve you. May you rule over your brothers, and may they bow down to you. Let anyone who curses you be cursed, but blessed be anyone who blesses you!”

Jacob had barely left when his brother Esau came in from his hunting. He fixed his father’s favorite meal, just as his father had asked him to. He brought it in to him, so that he could get his blessing.

“Who are you?” Isaac asked.

“I am your son, your firstborn, Esau,” he said.

“Then who was just here? Who brought my favorite meal, the one that I just ate? I gave him the blessing and I can’t take it back!”

Esau cried out a great and bitter cry, “Bless me also, Father!”

“I can’t,” Isaac said, “your brother has tricked me, and he has stolen your blessing.”

Esau cried out again, “You named him right when you named him Jacob. He has taken my place twice. First he took my birthright, and now he has stolen my blessing!”

“You must have saved a blessing for me,” Esau said to his father.

Isaac said, “I have already made you your brother’s servant. I have given him the corn and new wine of our fields. What do I have left to give to you?”

Esau asked, “Have you only one blessing, my Father? Bless me also!”

Then his father said to him,

“Behold, you shall dwell in the fatness of the earth, and of the dew of heaven from above; By your sword shall you live, and serve your brother; and it shall come to pass when you have the dominion, you shalt break his yoke from your neck. ”

The ego (esau) is commanded to serve the higher mind (jacob) and the ego is upset. you shalt break his yoke from your neck, the neck is a symbol of the cutoff pint that physical body with all of its desires surrenders to the mind, above the neck.

The command is that the go will not be in charge of the mind (neck) any longer.

From that day on Esau hated his brother, Jacob.\

“One day, my father will die,” he said, “and then I will kill Jacob!” Esau’s words got back to Rebekah ( the spirit ).

Rebekah said to Jacob, “Your brother wants to kill you. Go to my brother Laban in Haban and stay there until Esau has settled down. I will send for you when things are more calm.”

The ego fights back, because it has lost control of the faculties, and wants to take it back.

Rebekah ( spirit ) then went to her husband ( the mind )( the higher spirit functioning in the mental process ), Isaac. She said to him, ” I would be so disgusted if Jacob were to marry a woman that worships idols like live here. Please send him to my brother, Labon in Hebron and let him find a wife there.”

Hebron is the place of the jews :a jew is one inwardly” jacob is to take a wife (symbol of the higher emotions) from hebron, meaning from the meditative state.

Isaac agreed and called Jacob and gave him a blessing saying,

“You shall not marry a Canaanite woman (the mind in it’s lower aspect Canaanite). Go to Padanaram (the higher aspect of one’s mind), to the home of your mother’s father Bethuel ; and chose a wife from the daughters of your uncle Laban.

Bethuel means house of bread, bread being a symbol of the higher spiritual nature.

And God Almighty bless you, and your marriage and give you many children.

May God bless you and your family as he blessed Abraham so you can possess the land he gave to Abraham.” Abraham is the higher self guiding you within to the higher aspect of the spirit.

Jacob left for his uncle’s home.

Ever since the doctrine of sympathies was propounded by the Greeks and popularized in the Renaissance by Agrippa, there has been a great deal of emphasis in esoteric circles on establishing sets of correspondences. Sometimes these lists have become elaborate tables, such as those in The Magus of Francis Barrett (1801) or, as perhaps the ultimate example, Liber 777 by Aleister Crowley. According to MacGregor Mathers and all those who use him as a source (although not according to scholars such as Gershom Scholem), this sort of knowledge represents the “unwritten qabala.” If so, it can hardly be said to have remained unwritten!

Aside from aesthetic theoretical considerations and mystical possibilities, such correspondences are of the greatest importance in all sorts of magic. It is well known that magic operates by sympathy or contagion, so correspondences are at least half of magic.

A convenient means of classifying these correspondences is the qabalistic Tree of Life with its Sephiroth and Paths–the 32 Paths of Wisdom with their elemental, planetary, and astrological significations. One key part of this system is the twelve single letters of the Hebrew alphabet, which correspond to the twelve signs of the Zodiac. To key anything to the Zodiac is to key it to the twelve single letters (heh, vav, zayin, cheth, teth, yod, lamed, nun, samekh, ayin, tzaddi, and qoph) and through them to every other category containing twelve items.

The twelve tribes (clans) of Israel derive from the twelve sons of Jacob, aka “Israel.” These sons/tribes were, in order of birth, Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Dan, Naphtali, Gad, Asher, Issachar, Zebulun, Joseph, and Benjamin. Levi became the priest tribe, not one of the twelve, while Joseph split into two tribes named after the sons of Joseph, Manasseh and Ephraim.

Jacob’s first wife was Leah, and she was the mother of Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun; these are called the “Leah tribes.” Leah’s handmaiden, Zilpah, was the mother of Gad and Asher. Jacob’s second wife, Rachel, was the mother of Joseph and Benjamin, while her handmaiden Bilhah was the mother of Dan and Naphtali. The mother of Joseph’s sons, Manasseh and Ephraim, was Asenath, daughter of Potipherah, Egyptian priest of On, but they are considered “Rachel tribes” because of their grandmother.

Since there were twelve tribes, it is natural to assume that some correlation with the twelve signs of the zodiac was intended or, if it was not intended, that it is at least feasible. Given the passion for correspondences among scholars of these matters and the necessity for them among magicians, it would seem to be desirable to come up with some sensible correlation. Indeed, MacGregor Mathers attempted to assign the tribes to the signs in a logical fashion in his essay, “Twelve Signs and Twelve Tribes,” reprinted in R. A. Gilbert’s The Sorcerer and His Apprentice (Aquarian Press, 1983).

However, even though these attributions were used in ritual in the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn (particularly in the consecration of the Lotus Wand), not everyone has chosen to accept them as Holy Writ. For example, Z’ev ben Shimon Halevi (Warren Kenton) gives an entirely different system in Kabbalah and Exodus (Weiser, 1988).

Any attempt to attribute astrological signs to the twelve tribes must first of all, it would seem, arrive at some logical and definite order for the tribes. The order of birth has already been given, although some confusion may arise when one substitutes Manasseh and Ephraim for Levi. (Joseph’s sons were born after all the others, but they could be said to substitute for Joseph and therefore precede Benjamin). A description in the second chapter of Numbers puts the twelve tribes in four camps at the cardinal points and designates their marching order as that listed below:

East Camp of Judah Judah

Issachar

Zebulun

South Camp of Reuben Reuben

Simeon

Gad

Center (tabernacle) (Levi)

West Camp of Ephraim Ephraim

Manasseh

Benjamin

North Camp of Dan Dan

Asher

Naphtali

This is also the order assumed by Calmet’s Dictionary of the Holy Bible (cited by Manly P. Hall’s Secret Teachings of All Ages, 1928) in attributing the jewels on the breastplate of the High Priest to the tribes. (This is another correspondence question where there is little agreement. I have also seen an attribution [in Kenneth Mackenzie’s Royal Masonic Cyclopedia, 1877, for example] based on the order of birth and including Levi and Joseph instead of Manasseh and Ephraim.) The listing in Numbers is the order adapted by Halevi in attributing the signs of the zodiac, beginning with Aries.

Mathers begins his list with Leo, but, because of various considerations, does not then follow the order of the zodiac. The twelve tribes of Israel and their associated astrological signs according to Mathers and Halevi are shown in the below table.

Tribe Mother Mathers Halevi

Judah Leah Leo Aries

Issachar Leah Cancer Taurus

Zebulun Leah Capricorn Gemini

Reuben Leah Aquarius Cancer

Simeon Leah Pisces Leo

Gad Zilpah Aries Virgo

Ephraim Rachel (Asenath) Taurus Libra

Manasseh Rachel (Asenath) Gemini Scorpio

Benjamin Rachel Sagittarius Sagittarius

Dan Bilhah Scorpio Capricorn

Asher Zilpah Libra Aquarius

Naphtali Bilhah Virgo Pisces

At first glance, Halevi’s list may seem more logical, but Mathers—correctly in my opinion—attributed the four main tribes or camps–Judah (East), Reuben (South), Ephraim (West), and Dan (North)–to the fixed signs of the zodiac, the four tetramorphs of the vision of Ezekiel; namely, Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius (bull, lion, eagle, and man). His other attributions, however, are based on rather liberal and strained interpretations of the descriptions given in Genesis 49 and Deuteronomy 33—that, and the standards or armorial bearings of the various tribes (which are said to have their origins in Freemasonry), as if the sons of Joseph had been English peers. For example, he attributes Gad to Aries because the descriptions fit the “martial and dominant nature of Aries.” Issachar is allotted to Cancer because the description “coincides well with the peaceful nature of the quiet and watery sign.”

Mathers rather eccentrically insisted on beginning the zodiac in Leo at the star Regulus; hence Judah falls to Leo. Another reason for this assignment is that Genesis 49:9 says that “Judah is a lion’s whelp.” That seems a very strong reason for the attribution until you consider that Deuteronomy 33:22 says that Dan is a lion’s whelp! Of course, the New Testament refers to Jesus as the lion of Judah. Gematria proves of very little help, here. “Lion’s whelp” is gur arieh, 425, which is 25 x 17. Capricorn, Gedi, is 17, so perhaps gur arieh indicates the martial aspect (25) of Capricorn. That idea, however, does not seem to lead anywhere, especially in view of the fact that the appellation is applied to two separate tribes. But one might consider that, although the progression of the signs is clockwise on a horoscope, it is counterclockwise in the heavens as seen from earth. This fact is reflected in the Golden Dawn’s Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Hexagram, where one begins with Leo in the East and progresses to Taurus (not Scorpio) in the South. Based on this ritual, and the placing of Leo in the East to accord with the primacy given to this sign by Mathers, we could come up with this list of attributions:

Judah Leo

Issachar Cancer

Zebulun Gemini

Reuben Taurus

Simeon Aries

Gad Pisces

Ephraim Aquarius

Manasseh Capricorn

Benjamin Sagittarius

Dan Scorpio

Asher Libra

Naphtali Virgo

Note that half (and only half) of this list coincides with that of Mathers. If, on the other hand, you wish to give no special importance to the fixed signs and follow Halevi in the assignment of Judah to Aries, but follow the counterclockwise scheme, you get this, which I personally consider altogether unsatisfactory (or at least unsatisfying):

Judah Aries

Issachar Pisces

Zebulun Aquarius

Reuben Capricorn

Simeon Sagittarius

Gad Scorpio

Ephraim Libra

Manasseh Virgo

Benjamin Leo

Dan Cancer

Asher Gemini

Naphtali Taurus

One might also consider whether, at the time of the Exodus, the Vernal Equinox might not have been in Taurus. That would require a date previous to something like 2200 B.C., which is unlikely, but the nomadic Jews had no astrology of their own and may have borrowed what they knew from an ancient Chaldean culture in the Taurean Age. How else can one explain the prominence throughout scripture of the fixed signs of the zodiac? The four tetramorphs play a central role in the vision of Ezekiel, and they are said to correspond to the four evangelists of the New Testament. They are used to this day in Golden Dawn ceremony and in rituals based on those of the Golden Dawn. Aside from the fact that three of the four constellations in question are rather conspicuous (Taurus, Leo, and Scorpio), there is really no way to account for this emphasis except to assume that it came from a period when these four constellations marked the equinoxes and solstices. In any case, the tribe dominant in the East—that is, Judah—would then naturally fall to Taurus. Applying the “counterclockwise concept,” we end up with this list:

Judah Taurus

Issachar Aries

Zebulun Pisces

Reuben Aquarius

Simeon Capricorn

Gad Sagittarius

Ephraim Scorpio

Manasseh Libra

Benjamin Virgo

Dan Leo

Asher Cancer

Naphtali Gemini

This scheme accords with Deuteronomy by having Dan as the “lion’s whelp.” Judah is the ox, Reuben the man, and Ephraim the eagle.

We can also come up with a number of schemes by assuming that the three tribes in each camp represent zodiacal triplicities (that is, Fire signs, Water signs, and so on). However, that does not seem as likely to have been intended as an attribution that follows the circle of the zodiacal belt.

We have so far assumed that the order of the tribes that should be used is that of the encampment and marching order described in the second chapter of Numbers. Indeed, the resemblance of this circular encampment with twelve divisions to a standard horoscope chart (and/or to the belt of the zodiac) is striking and in all likelihood intended. But we might also want to consider the order of birth and various other orderings that occur in scripture. For example, there is the order of blessing (by Jacob) in Genesis 49: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Zebulun, Issachar, Dan, Gad, Asher, Naphtali, Joseph, and Benjamin. Similarly, there is the order of blessing by Moses in Deuteronomy 33: Reuben, Judah, Levi, Benjamin, Joseph (with mentions of Ephraim and Manasseh), Zebulun, Issachar, Gad, Dan (the “lion’s whelp”), Naphtali, and Asher—with no mention at all of Simeon! In Deuteronomy 27:12-13, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Joseph, and Benjamin, cited in that order, are to stand on Mt. Gerizim to bless, while Reuben, Gad, Asher, Zebulun, Dan, and Naphtali are to stand on Mt. Ebal to curse.

Besides the business about Judah and the lion’s whelp, we can likewise consider other beasts and elements prominent in the descriptions of the sons of Jacob included in his blessing in Genesis 49: Reuben (water), Zebulun (sea), Issachar (ass), Dan (serpent), Naphtali (hind), and Benjamin (wolf). This really doesn’t seem to get us very far, however. Right away, we have Judah = Leo and Dan = Scorpio, but that still leaves ten attributions to be made. Reuben could be either Aquarius or any water sign (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces); likewise for Zebulun. Benjamin could be either Aries or Scorpio, the signs ruled by Mars (because of its association with the wolf). But the ass and the hind have no clearcut astrological associations.

As with most questions of this kind, nothing can be said to be absolutely correct. The student is free to make her/his own attributions without fear of gross error.

Nevertheless, despite the apparent difficulties with the system of Mathers (its evidently arbitrary nature and the fact that the signs do not follow in order according to the encampment), I must render the decision in his favor. There is nothing to recommend Halevi’s (Kenton’s) system except a certain superficial common sense in placing Aries in the East with Judah. I have already gone into the more-or-less compelling reasons to allot the four camps to the four fixed signs, with Judah for Leo despite the remark about Dan. Besides, the system presented by Mathers in his essay is not, as most people think, original with him. It duplicates without alteration the system found in the great Albert Pike’s mammoth Masonic opus, Morals and Dogma (1871). (Mathers was, of course, a Freemason, as were the other founders of the Golden Dawn.) Pike is clear where Mathers is muddy, and the Golden Dawn chief’s reasoning becomes clear if you read Pike’s explanations. This book is not some secret tome hidden away under lock and key in Masonic libraries, as the reputation of the Masons might lead you to believe, but is generally available in most public libraries. It is fascinating reading for the amateur or professional qabalist.

Here’s what Pike has to say about it (in his discussion of the 25th Scottish Rite degree of “Knight of the Brazen Serpent:):

“There is no more striking proof of the universal adoration paid the stars and constellations, than the arrangement of the Hebrew camp in the Desert, and the allegory in regard to the twelve Tribes of Israel, ascribed in the Hebrew legends to Jacob. The Hebrew camp was a quadrilateral, in sixteen divisions, of which the central four were occupied by images of the four elements. The four divisions at the four angles of the quadrilateral exhibited the four signs that the astrologers call fixed, and which they regard as subject to the influence of the four great Royal Stars, Regulus in Leo, Aldebaran in Taurus, Antares in Scorpio, and Fomalhaut in the mouth of Pisces, on which falls the water poured out by Aquarius; of which constellations the Scorpion was represented in the Hebrew blazonry by the Celestial Vulture or Eagle, that rises at the same time with it and is its paranatellon. The other signs were arranged on the four faces of the quadrilateral, and in the parallel and interior divisions.

“There is an astonishing coincidence between the characteristics assigned by Jacob to his sons, and those of the signs of the Zodiac, or the planets that have their domicile in those signs.

“Reuben is compared to running water, unstable, and that cannot excel; and he answers to Aquarius, his ensign being a man. The water poured out by Aquarius flows toward the South Pole, and it is the first of the four Royal Signs, ascending from the Winter Solstice.

“The Lion (Leo) is the device of Judah; and Jacob compares him to that animal, whose constellation in the Heavens is the domicile of the Sun; the Lion of the Tribe of Judah; by whose grip, when that of apprentice and that of fellow-craft—of Aquarius at the Winter Solstice and of Cancer at the Vernal Equinox—had not succeeded in raising him, Khurum was lifted out of the grave.

“Ephraim, on whose ensign appears the Celestial Bull, Jacob compares to the ox. Dan, bearing as his device a Scorpion, he compares to the Cerastes or horned Serpent, synonymous in astrological language with the vulture or pouncing eagle; and which bird was often substituted on the flag of Dan, in place of the venomous scorpion, on account of the terror which that reptile inspired, as the symbol of Typhon and his malign influences; wherefore the Eagle, as its paranatellon, that is, rising and setting at the same time with it, was naturally used in its stead. Hence the four famous figures in the sacred pictures of the Jews and Christians, and in Royal Arch Masonry, of the Lion, the Ox, the Man, and the Eagle, the four creatures of the Apocalypse, copied there from Ezekiel, in whose reveries and rhapsodies they are seen revolving around blazing circles.

“The Ram, domicile of Mars, chief of the Celestial Soldiery and of the twelve Signs, is the device of Gad, whom Jacob characterizes as a warrior, chief of his army.

“Cancer, in which are the stars termed Aselli, or little asses, is the device of the flag of Issachar, whom Jacob compares to an ass.

“Capricorn, of old represented with the tail of a fish, and called by astronomers the Son of Neptune, is the device of Zebulun, of whom Jacob says that he dwells on the shore of the sea.

“Sagittarius, chasing the Celestial Wolf, is the emblem of Benjamin, whom Jacob compares to a hunter: and in that constellation the Romans placed the domicile of Diana the huntress. Virgo, the domicile of Mercury, is borne on the flag of Naphtali, whose eloquence and agility Jacob magnifies, both of which are attributes of the Courier of the Gods. And of Simeon and Levi he speaks as united, as are the two fishes that make the Constellation Pisces, which is their armorial emblem.”

1 SAMUEL 7 KJV= (Ark/stones)

And the men of Kirjathjearim came, and fetched up the ark of the LORD, and brought it into the house of Abinadab in the hill, and sanctified Eleazar his son to keep the ark of the LORD.

And it came to pass, while the ark abode in Kirjathjearim, that the time was long; for it was twenty years: and all the house of Israel lamented after the LORD.

And Samuel spake unto all the house of Israel, saying, If ye do return unto the LORD with all your hearts, then put away the strange gods and Ashtaroth from among you, and prepare your hearts unto the LORD, and serve him only: and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.

Then the children of Israel did put away Baalim and Ashtaroth, and served the LORD only.

And Samuel said, Gather all Israel to Mizpeh, and I will pray for you unto the LORD.

And they gathered together to Mizpeh, and drew water, and poured it out before the LORD, and fasted on that day, and said there, We have sinned against the LORD. And Samuel judged the children of Israel in Mizpeh.

And when the Philistines heard that the children of Israel were gathered together to Mizpeh, the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel. And when the children of Israel heard it, they were afraid of the Philistines.

And the children of Israel said to Samuel, Cease not to cry unto the LORD our God for us, that he will save us out of the hand of the Philistines.

And Samuel took a sucking lamb, and offered it for a burnt offering wholly unto the LORD: and Samuel cried unto the LORD for Israel; and the LORD heard him.

And as Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to battle against Israel: but the LORD thundered with a great thunder on that day upon the Philistines, and discomfited them; and they were smitten before Israel.

And the men of Israel went out of Mizpeh, and pursued the Philistines, and smote them, until they came under Bethcar.

Then Samuel took a stone, and set it between Mizpeh and Shen, and called the name of it Ebenezer, saying, Hitherto hath the LORD helped us.

So the Philistines were subdued, and they came no more into the coast of Israel: and the hand of the LORD was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel.

And the cities which the Philistines had taken from Israel were restored to Israel, from Ekron even unto Gath; and the coasts thereof did Israel deliver out of the hands of the Philistines. And there was peace between Israel and the Amorites.

And Samuel judged Israel all the days of his life.

And he went from year to year in circuit to Bethel, and Gilgal, and Mizpeh, and judged Israel in all those places.

And his return was to Ramah; for there was his house; and there he judged Israel; and there he built an altar unto the LORD.

HOOVER DAM ALIEN STAR CHART WELCOMING MAT

At the Hoover Dam, what is the meaning of this memorial inlay with the word Alcyone?

image: … More

1 ANSWER

It’s a calendar pointing to an exact date in time.

“When in the course of time the composition of our world and those other worlds in space shall be more fully known, record it here for future men to see and, having seen, to speculate, investigate and carry on the search.” -Oskar J.W. Hansen, 1935

Oskar J.W. Hansen’s Commemorative Plaza Showing The Terrazzo Floor.

This is the work of artist Oskar J.W. Hansen. He was commissioned to create art for the project to honor and commemorate the building and completion of the Hoover Dam (Bolder Dam). His basic plan was accepted after a competition that was held in the early 1930s by the US Reclamation Service.

Oskar J.W. Hansen, 1930s

Celestial Postions, A Universal Calendar

The memorial is the centerpiece of Hansen’s work, it consists of two winged sculptures. Surrounding the base is a terrazzo floor, inlaid with a star chart/celestial map. The chart preserves for future generations the exact date on which President Franklin D. Roosevelt dedicated the Dam. In the center of the floor are the important stars and features of the Polar region of the sky as they would appeared at 8:56pm 2.25 secs local apparent time on September 30, 1935 when the structure was dedicated.

Hansen created one of the modern world’s most exact time reference. It is designed to be understood symbolically even if the English language had long since been replaced. It assumes that the future society that discovers this inlay understands the math and physics concepts of the mid 20th century. Using a base symbolic representation and then adding more exact complexity would be the best chance to relate the details of when this structure was built.

The Pleiades showing Alcyone In The Center.

The Pleiades

The center Star is Alcyone (η Tau, η Tauri, Eta Tauri) a system in the constellation Taurus. It is the brightest star in the Pleiades open cluster aged at less than 50 million years. Alcyone is approximately 371 light years from Earth and is named after the mythological figure Alcyone, one of the mythological Pleiades. In Greek mythology, Alcyone (Ancient Greek: λκυόνη Halkyónē) was the daughter of Aeolus, either by Enarete or Aegiale. Alcyone is also known as 昴宿 六 (the Sixth Star of the Hairy Head) in Chinese.

The apparent magnitudes of stars are shown as they would appear to the naked eye at a distance of about 190 trillion miles from earth (10 parsecs from our Earth). The center of the Sun is shown as the very center of the flag pole. The positions of the stars included in the map are then related in hour, minutes, and right ascension from this center of the Ecliptic.

There is a section on along the edge that states:

“This diagram traces a complete sidereal revolution of the Equinox, otherwise known as the Platonic or Great Year. The average length of a complete sidereal revolution is 25,694.8 tropical years; but may differ from the mean time of revolution by 281.2 years the mean line of the precession of the role of the Earth’s equator shown here by the outside circumference on this white metal circle. It’s 46.9 degrees in diameter.”

Another section goes on to more detail:

“The inclination of the Earth’s equator may vary relative to the fixed ecliptic, from 21 deg 59 min to 24 deg 36 min and her role therefore nutates in a zone 2 deg 37 min as shown here by this yellow band.”

The design allows anyone versed in astronomy to calculate the precession (progressively earlier occurrence) of the Pole Star for approximately the next 14,000 years. Conversely, future generations could look upon this monument and determine, if no other means were available, the exact date on which Hoover Dam was dedicated.

Hansen sated at the time of the dedication:

“Instead of measuring 12 earthly hours, the dials measures a Platonic Year or Great Year, made up of 25,694.8 of our ordinary years. We cannot be sure of the exact length of the Platonic Year, because the civilized story of man, and hence, astronomy, is at the most only 10,000 years old; but we feel certain that it may not vary from the above mean time by more than 281.2 of our ordinary years…”

A Message To The Future

There are no other know public projects that have such an elaborate system for future generations to calculate the exact time a structure was built. Of course they do not need to actually be able to read the inscriptions to hopefully make sense of the symbolic references Hansen created.

The big question is why? Hansen firmly believed that many ancient cultures used similar techniques. He argued that a number of structures could be “read” by the exact positioning that was used in construction. Hansen never publicly mentioned the ancient cultures and the structures he felt strongly suggested an exact date of construction, but he spoke of them in early interviews.

There is very little doubt that Oskar Hansen a highly educated man and completely understood that history would look back at the Hover Dam as one of man’s largest modern building projects. He felt that just like the ancient Pyramids, this structure would last many 1000s of years and stand as a testament of the people that constructed it. Hansen created a message to the future and clearly understood that symbols would transcend time:

“Man has always sought to express and preserve the magnitude of his exploits in symbols. The written words are symbols arranged so as to preserve in objectified form the thought of man and to record his variant states, both mental and physical. All other arts are similar as to their symbolic significance. They take their place among the category of human endeavor simply as the interpreter of life to itself. They serve as an outer object typifying the inner process. They form the connecting link between the spiritual and the material world. They are the shadows cast by the realities of the soul.” – Oskar J.W. Hansen, 1935

HEBREWS 13:1 & 2:

LET BROTHERLY LOVE CONTINUE
image

1 CORINTHIANS 3 :14 But their minds were blinded: for until this day remaineth the same vail untaken away in the reading of the old testament; which vail is done away in Christ.3:15 But even unto this day, when Moses is read, the vail is upon their heart.3:16 Nevertheless when it shall turn to the Lord, the vail shall be taken away.3:17 Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.3:18 But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord. 2 Corinthians
——
ACTS 2:17 And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:

2:18 And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy: Acts

——
DANIEL 2:1 And in the second year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar Nebuchadnezzar dreamed dreams, wherewith his spirit was troubled, and his sleep brake from him.2:2 Then the king commanded to call the magicians, and the astrologers, and the sorcerers, and the Chaldeans, for to shew the king his dreams. So they came and stood before the king.2:3 And the king said unto them, I have dreamed a dream, and my spirit was troubled to know the dream.2:4 Then spake the Chaldeans to the king in Syriack, O king, live for ever: tell thy servants the dream, and we will shew the interpretation.2:5 The king answered and said to the Chaldeans, The thing is gone from me: if ye will not make known unto me the dream, with the interpretation thereof, ye shall be cut in pieces, and your houses shall be made a dunghill.2:6 But if ye shew the dream, and the interpretation thereof, ye shall receive of me gifts and rewards and great honour: therefore shew me the dream, and the interpretation thereof.2:7 They answered again and said, Let the king tell his servants the dream, and we will shew the interpretation of it.2:8 The king answered and said, I know of certainty that ye would gain the time, because ye see the thing is gone from me.2:9 But if ye will not make known unto me the dream, there is but one decree for you: for ye have prepared lying and corrupt words to speak before me, till the time be changed: therefore tell me the dream, and I shall know that ye can shew me the interpretation thereof.2:10 The Chaldeans answered before the king, and said, There is not a man upon the earth that can shew the king’s matter: therefore there is no king, lord, nor ruler, that asked such things at any magician, or astrologer, or Chaldean.2:11 And it is a rare thing that the king requireth, and there is none other that can shew it before the king, except the gods, whose dwelling is not with flesh.2:12 For this cause the king was angry and very furious, and commanded to destroy all the wise men of Babylon.2:13 And the decree went forth that the wise men should be slain; and they sought Daniel and his fellows to be slain.2:14 Then Daniel answered with counsel and wisdom to Arioch the captain of the king’s guard, which was gone forth to slay the wise men of Babylon:2:15 He answered and said to Arioch the king’s captain, Why is the decree so hasty from the king? Then Arioch made the thing known to Daniel.2:16 Then Daniel went in, and desired of the king that he would give him time, and that he would shew the king the interpretation.2:17 Then Daniel went to his house, and made the thing known to Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, his companions:2:18 That they would desire mercies of the God of heaven concerning this secret; that Daniel and his fellows should not perish with the rest of the wise men of Babylon.2:19 Then was the secret revealed unto Daniel in a night vision. Then Daniel blessed the God of heaven.2:20 Daniel answered and said, Blessed be the name of God for ever and ever: for wisdom and might are his:2:21 And he changeth the times and the seasons: he removeth kings, and setteth up kings: he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding:2:22 He revealeth the deep and secret things: he knoweth what is in the darkness, and the light dwelleth with him.2:23 I thank thee, and praise thee, O thou God of my fathers, who hast given me wisdom and might, and hast made known unto me now what we desired of thee: for thou hast now made known unto us the king’s matter.2:24 Therefore Daniel went in unto Arioch, whom the king had ordained to destroy the wise men of Babylon: he went and said thus unto him; Destroy not the wise men of Babylon: bring me in before the king, and I will shew unto the king the interpretation.2:25 Then Arioch brought in Daniel before the king in haste, and said thus unto him, I have found a man of the captives of Judah, that will make known unto the king the interpretation.2:26 The king answered and said to Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, Art thou able to make known unto me the dream which I have seen, and the interpretation thereof?2:27 Daniel answered in the presence of the king, and said, The secret which the king hath demanded cannot the wise men, the astrologers, the magicians, the soothsayers, shew unto the king;2:28 But there is a God in heaven that revealeth secrets, and maketh known to the king Nebuchadnezzar what shall be in the latter days. Thy dream, and the visions of thy head upon thy bed, are these;2:29 As for thee, O king, thy thoughts came into thy mind upon thy bed, what should come to pass hereafter: and he that revealeth secrets maketh known to thee what shall come to pass.2:30 But as for me, this secret is not revealed to me for any wisdom that I have more than any living, but for their sakes that shall make known the interpretation to the king, and that thou mightest know the thoughts of thy heart.2:31 Thou, O king, sawest, and behold a great image. This great image, whose brightness was excellent, stood before thee; and the form thereof was terrible.2:32 This image’s head was of fine gold, his breast and his arms of silver, his belly and his thighs of brass,2:33 His legs of iron, his feet part of iron and part of clay.2:34 Thou sawest till that a stone was cut out without hands, which smote the image upon his feet that were of iron and clay, and brake them to pieces.2:35 Then was the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold, broken to pieces together, and became like the chaff of the summer threshingfloors; and the wind carried them away, that no place was found for them: and the stone that smote the image became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth.2:36 This is the dream; and we will tell the interpretation thereof before the king.2:37 Thou, O king, art a king of kings: for the God of heaven hath given thee a kingdom, power, and strength, and glory.2:38 And wheresoever the children of men dwell, the beasts of the field and the fowls of the heaven hath he given into thine hand, and hath made thee ruler over them all. Thou art this head of gold.2:39 And after thee shall arise another kingdom inferior to thee, and another third kingdom of brass, which shall bear rule over all the earth.2:40 And the fourth kingdom shall be strong as iron: forasmuch as iron breaketh in pieces and subdueth all things: and as iron that breaketh all these, shall it break in pieces and bruise.2:41 And whereas thou sawest the feet and toes, part of potters’ clay, and part of iron, the kingdom shall be divided; but there shall be in it of the strength of the iron, forasmuch as thou sawest the iron mixed with miry clay.2:42 And as the toes of the feet were part of iron, and part of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong, and partly broken.2:43 And whereas thou sawest iron mixed with miry clay, they shall mingle themselves with the seed of men: but they shall not cleave one to another, even as iron is not mixed with clay.2:44 And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever.2:45 Forasmuch as thou sawest that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it brake in pieces the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great God hath made known to the king what shall come to pass hereafter: and the dream is certain, and the interpretation thereof sure.2:46 Then the king Nebuchadnezzar fell upon his face, and worshipped Daniel, and commanded that they should offer an oblation and sweet odours unto him.2:47 The king answered unto Daniel, and said, Of a truth it is, that your God is a God of gods, and a Lord of kings, and a revealer of secrets, seeing thou couldest reveal this secret.2:48 Then the king made Daniel a great man, and gave him many great gifts, and made him ruler over the whole province of Babylon, and chief of the governors over all the wise men of Babylon.2:49 Then Daniel requested of the king, and he set Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, over the affairs of the province of Babylon: but Daniel sat in the gate of the king.
